Maori
Compiled by Moyra Turkington
The following Maori names are chosen from an unpublished manuscript compiled about 1925 by the missionary Rev. Henry James Fletcher (1868-1933). Thanks to the university of Waikato for making it available online. In this era, (the late 1800s - early 1900s) surnames were only beginning to be introduced among the Maori. The surname taken would generally be the first name of the person’s father.
